TITANIUM CORE SINK TIPS

At the Spey Company, I am always pushing the limit on innovation with new concepts and ideas in my fly fishing product designs.  In my opinion something needed to be done to transfer the energy from the apex of the fly line to the end of your sinking leader to turn over large intruder style steelhead flies and large salt water streamers. These new style of sink tips are the world's first to carry their own potential energy and can only do one thing - turn large flies over as straight as an arrow. It's simple physics.

THE CORE MATERIAL

These sink tips are constructed over a solid  titanium core at the heart of the material that renders them virtually indestructible. Because of this new manufacturing process, the tips boast an astounding 40 pound test breaking strength and almost zero stretch or memory.

CLEAR JACKET

The crystal clear cross linked poly shell is tough, UV resistant, and has an extremely small visual profile so the tips will fish very stealthily even in the most demanding clear water situations. They almost seem to disappear in the water!  Another great aspect of these lines is the set up of the fly cast. This will now happen with ease using single and under hand casting techniques.  This is possible because of its straight  and very thin profile; it just seems to pull out of the water like butter.  These tips turn large dead chicken style steelhead flies or the largest of  deer headed northern pike divers with authority.  When in the water the tip will always go straight, cutting through the water, resulting in faster sink rates per grain weight and a better fly presentation.

 SINK RATES

We will be manufacturing them in several different grain weights and sink rates; a 14 grain/foot and an 8 grain/foot in both a fast and a mid sink rate. I could call out the inches per second, but I think it is non- applicable in sink rate applications.  I could tell you how fast they sink in a dead water controlled bucket-like environment or do a quick math calculation to find the specific gravity to the density of water, however, last I checked, I don't fish in these dead water bucket-like controlled conditions. The factors in sink rates have, in my opinion, too many variables.  To conduct a true scientific test, you must have a control.  In this case, this is not possible. A few of the factors that would have to be equated are water suspensions, density, water speed, fly size, fly weight , tippet sizes , approach to the swing, diameter of sinking line, etc. This all would have to be taken into account and I feel its just not possible. So we will keep it simple. I will make them two ways:  thin jacket and fat jacket. Thin jacket will have less resistance to the current and sink faster. The fat jacket will ride higher in the water column because it will have more water resistance.

STORAGE

Simply wrap them in a 3 to 4" coil around your left hand leaving a 6" tag.  Then put the tag loop end through 3 to 4 times. Now they will never become coiled, tangled, or twisted.  These tips have tons of straight memory when unpacked for fishing. It's like magic - straight as can be. No more pulling out rat nested tips from the leader wallet, spending valuable fishing time chasing loop ends.

BITE GAURD APPLICATIONS

The Spey Co Titanium Core tips also double as the ultimate bite guard as well. Now your sinking leader will not only turn over your large salt water streamers with ease, they are also tooth proof from loop to tip. Great for stopping that potential cut off from razor sharp gill plates, alligator rolls from large toothy saltwater and fresh water fish! Getting bitten off  will now be a thing of the past.

ADDING TIPPETS

Attaching fresh tippets on the stream is very easy . The material, because of is titanium core, is NOT nail knottable. I have always struggled with tying nail knots, anyway, in cold weather with cold fingers and the results were always off center. I also always worried about the nail slipping off the end or needing some tool for tying the knot. These have a very flexible solid core.  Just fold over with your fingers and use an albright knot. Use a 20 to 30 pound tippet material.  I have found a short video on the correct way to tie this knot. Please see video below.

Or simply attach loops at either end of the jacket with the mono finger trap material.
